Joanna Frankel
Praised for her "aesthetic intelligence," (The New York Sun), her "heartfelt sensitivity" (Bergen-Egmond-Schoorl, Holland), and her "powerhouse performances" (The Post and Courier, Charleston, South Carolina), violinist Joanna Marie Frankel consistently shares her unique imagination before many and diverse audiences, in concerts that have taken her around the globe. A recipient of The 2007 Career Grant from the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation, and of The Juilliard School's prestigious 2007 William Schuman Prize for outstanding artistic excellence and leadership, Ms. Frankel was most recently named a 2008 La Gesse Foundation Young Artist Fellow, which will lead to solo recitals in France, Germany, Hungary, and New York City's own Carnegie Hall. Ms. Frankel performed her Carnegie Hall recital debut in January of 2007, under the auspices of Artists International.
Ms. Frankel has appeared as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician in important concert halls worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Sherwood Auditorium (La Jolla), Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Rachmaninoff Hall (Moscow), Glazunov Hall (St. Petersburg), Suk Hall, Rudolfinum (Prague), Slovak Philharmonic Hall (Bratislava), Vanemuise Hall (Tartu), and Chamber Music Hall (Helsinki), among others. Her performances have included invitations as solo guest artist with Santa Fe New Music, the Ambler Symphony, the Olney Symphony, the Academy Chamber Society, Ensemble 212 of NYC, The Southern Adventist University Symphony Orchestra, and the Ocean City Pops. As a recitalist, Ms. Frankel has been presented at Trinity Church's Concerts at One Series in New York, The Arts Club of Washington, Temple University, The Ethical Society of Philadelphia, The Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, Spoleto Festival USA, Ru•nekerk Bergen of The Netherlands, and to benefit The Alexian Brothers of the Southeast Foundation of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Ms. Frankel has won top prizes in concerto competitions associated with the Ambler Symphony, The Pottstown Symphony, The San Angelo Symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra's Mann Music Center, and The California International Young Artists' violin competition; her solo performances have aired on 90.5 WSMC of Collegedale, Tennessee, and on 90.1 WRTI of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Proficient on the viola as well as on the violin, she embodies an honest love of chamber music and is consistently engaged to perform at a large variety of festivals, which have included La Jolla's Summerfest, The Aspen Music Festival's summer and winter seasons, The Spoleto Festival USA, The Juilliard String Quartet Seminar, Juilliard's Chamberfest, The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra Institute at Juilliard, the New York String Orchestra Seminar under the baton of Jaime Laredo, and The International Holland Music Sessions.
Ms. Frankel is a native of Philadelphia and began her violin studies there at age three with Suzuki training. A recent scholarship graduate of The Juilliard School, she has worked closely with mentors Jascha Brodsky, Choong-Jin Chang, Robert Chen, Masao Kawasaki, Joseph Kalichstein, and Cho-Liang Lin. Throughout the 2007-8 and 2008-9 concert seasons, Ms. Frankel will be a part of the inaugural fellowship class of The Academy- A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Institute, a new initiative that combines musical pedagogy with a full series of chamber music engagements at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She performs on a fine Gaetano Vinaccia violin, crafted in Naples in 1819, and a custom-made Robert Brode viola, built especially for her in 2001.
