We are building a hopeful future for new music to thrive.

As we reflect on 2023, our community’s commitment to inspire audiences with new music commissions, and ambitious projects once again gives us reasons to celebrate.
Together with our world-class partners, we created site-specific performances, new works, recordings, and digital experiences for more audiences than ever before.

“I have been working with Metropolis since 2015, and have enjoyed their openness, curiosity, and adventurousness in programming and bringing artists and audiences together. Dynamic, flexible, and ever-shifting – Metropolis excites while it investigates how we make music together.”

Paula Matthusen has woven her electroacoustic textures into many Metropolis projects, including For the Birds and Flame Keepers.

Our Biophony series has employed 530 musicians and composers bringing new music to 120 New York City locations.

Together we are creating, amplifying, and flourishing.

Here’s some of the diverse musical experiences your donations helped to create in 2023:
  • We gathered 180 independent expert musicians for 35 events in partnership with world-class venues across New York City.
  • We released two ground-breaking studio productions: In A Grove, our first opera recording, and Telekinesis, nominated for Germany’s prestigious Opus Klassik Award.
  • We launched new multidisciplinary online experiences in partnership with 64 artist around the world.

“It’s almost like the work itself is the reward. I feel so fulfilled by Metropolis projects — the interaction with musicians and multidisciplinary artists — it inspires you and moves you and it changes you. I grow from all the collaborations.”

Ricardo Romaneiro’s premieres over the years include Biophony SoundGarden, The Rite Remixed, Hallucinations, and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.

Since 2021, our Flame Keepers installation commissioned 100+ composers who have created over 3,000 musical stems.

“Working with Metropolis literally changed my life and career, opening a new door for me. Andrew Cyr figures out the best possible (and often unexpected) combination of artists and the resulting projects are crucial to the New York music scene. I’m forever grateful.”

Erika Dohi produced a 13-event piano festival at One Rivington, bringing together jazz improvisers, classical virtuosos, and contemporary specialists.

Our studio recordings have received international recognition including Grammy and Opus Klassik nominations, a Juno award, and New York Times album of the year.
