“Spectacular… the astringent strings swarm like locusts clouding a window… the wildest, most anarchic sound.”

About the Album
Released May 19, 2014 on Def Jam Records
…And Then You Shoot Your Cousin is the eleventh studio album by American hip hop band The Roots. The album is conceptual, but unlike their previous release Undun (2010) — which was also a collaboration with Metropolis Ensemble — this album features several characters in this story, not just one, in a satirical look at violence in hip hop and American society overall.
To celebrate the album’s release, Metropolis artists joined The Roots and DJ A-Trak on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” (NBC) to perform the new track “Never” on May 20, 2014.

Project In-Depth
“Cousin” is a satirical look at the Dionysian impulse in contemporary hip-hop told through a series of ne'er-do-wells and outlaws. The characters are dysfunctional, alienated, occasionally mean-spirited, but always meaningful – denizens of the permanent underclass who have become lost in history's shuffle without losing their sense of the broader comedy of existence.
