John Roberts: Caprice Mutations
*World Premiere Metropolis Ensemble Commission

Roberts operates with a sense of personal and artistic style that can make it seem like his peers are just out there peddling 12’s.
— Andrew Gaerig, Pitchfork

Metropolis Ensemble is proud to present for the first time, a collaborative performance between internationally renowned violinist Sean Lee and acclaimed electronic musician/composer John Roberts. Using Niccolo Paganini’s notoriously difficult Caprices as a jumping off point, Roberts and Lee will engage in a unique dialogue between violin and sampler.

Both musicians will focus on pushing the technical and musical boundaries of their respective instruments through these rich, 19th Century character pieces and a selection of Roberts’ own forward-thinking compositions, using sampled source material from Lee’s interpretations of Paganini’s works.

We are beyond excited to introduce John Roberts as a new member of the Metropolis community. Over the coming seasons we are looking forward to many new collaborations and commissions.
