About the Concert

Join Metropolis Ensemble and Artistic Director / Conductor Andrew Cyr for "Cymbeline," a chamber orchestra concert featuring premieres and new commissions from rising star composers David Bruce, Chris Cerrone, Jakub Ciupinski, Vivian Fung.

As part of our mission to create new platforms for leading, young performing artists to share their artistry in creative collaborations the freshest voices in composition, we are gathering together newly commissioned concerti for mandolin (Avi Avital), harp (Bridget Kibbey), guitar (Matias Jacobsson), and string quartet (Quartet Senza Misura), all performers who are re-imagining their instruments for new contexts and contemporary genres.

Pre-Concert Talk

Avi Avital and composer David Bruce offer a pre-concert performance and composer chat to discuss Bruce’s dynamic new work, Cymbelineand Avital’s new disc for Deutsche Grammophon Between Worlds. Avital will perform excerpts from Cymbeline and Between Worlds, illustrating how both projects have emerged out of Bruce and Avital's shared passion for music that crosses the borders between folk and classical.

Cymbeline was written for Avital and its namesake is an old Celtic word meaning "Lord of the Sun." According to the composer, Cymbeline was inspired initally by the seemingly warm and golden color palette of mandolin and strings. Between Worlds, Avi Avital’s second disc for DG explores Bartók and de Falla, then travels from Georgian and Bulgarian folk dances to South American songs and Yiddish melodies.
