on the program

Charles Wuorinen: String Quartet No.4

Hans Thomalla: In Partial View

Matthew Ricketts: Albumblatt

Sofia Gubaidulina: Josquiniana

Mivos explores notions of history, memory, and the media we use to preserve them with an evening of works by Hans Thomalla, Charles Wuorinen, Matthew Ricketts, and Sofia Gubaidulina. Thomalla’s Albumblatt offers a musical meditation on the scrapbook—in German, Poesiealbum—that considers how both media engage with the ephemeral. Charles Wuorinen’s Josquinana and Matthew Ricketts’ In Partial View instead explore ways in which new music might relate to its musical past, both drawing heavily on the works of French Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez. The program will conclude with Sofia Gubaidulina’s String Quartet No. 4, which looks to examine how musicians interact with their past selves by pairing the live quartet with pre-recorded tape.
