“Brittelle has been drawing from his varied experiences in classical music, punk rock, and electronica to produce silo-bombing music that is at once free-ranging, formally adventurous, unconventionally beautiful, and a joyful thrill to experience.” —The Nation
Using the symbology of our shared past to look forward into an uncertain future of climate change, machine sentience, and the ever-expanding cyber universe, this extraordinary collective debuts the first material generated through the Meta Simulacrum, an interdisciplinary, alternate-reality digital platform designed by composer/producer William Brittelle.
This uniquely collaborative project draws from modern classical, jazz, neo-soul, vaporwave, and experimental rock worlds with recontextualized elements of ’80s sound, with each collaborator contributing core content; its retro-futuristic musical landscape are supercharged by the visionary work of filmmaker Isaac Gale and editor/computer coder Patrick Marschke. An elegy for a lost future, and a de facto embrace of the strange, surreal times ahead.
William Brittelle is a North Carolina-raised Brooklyn-based creator of music, text, and multimedia. An avid collaborator, Brittelle has worked with a number of artists across multiple disciplines, including Roomful of Teeth, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Bryce Dessner, Kanye West, Son Lux, Oneohtrix Point Never, A Far Cry, Metropolis, and the Seattle, Baltimore, and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras, the Basel Sinfonietta, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His production projects include upcoming and recent albums with Julia Holter/Spektral Quartet, violinist Michi Wiancko, keyboardist Erika Dohi, and Roomful of Teeth. His latest full-length LP entitled "Spiritual America" featuring Wye Oak, the Metropolis Ensemble, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, was released by Nonesuch/New Amsterdam in 2019.
Commissioned by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. A Requiem for a Lost Future is copresented by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, The Great Northern, and The Walker Art Center in association with Liquid Music. Metropolis Ensemble is a founding partner of The Meta Simulacrum.
