Stephen Boegehold

Stephen Boegehold is a drummer and composer based in New York City. As a collaborator, Stephen has worked with many of his generation’s forward-thinking jazz and improvising artists including Roulette Intermedium Artists in Residence Sonya Belaya and Nick Dunston, whose 2020 release Atlantic Extraction: Live at Threes appeared on Downbeat’s best albums of 2020 list. He has appeared on more than many recordings by peers and mentors, including Amir ElSaffar’s musical re-imagination of The Mother produced by The Wooster Group theater company.

As a bandleader, Stephen has self-released three albums, each focusing on different approaches to ensemble, composition, and improvisation: “A Telling of Death” (2016), “Shared Realities” (2017), and “Way of Dreams” (2017). His fourth release, And Now, written for a trio of piano, bass, and drums and featuring poet/rapper Brent Smith, is currently in production. No matter the context, Stephen is most interested in examining and honoring the vast spectrum of human experience by means of improvisation and collaboration. Bringing together these actions lies at the heart of his musical, personal, and spiritual practices.
