Theodore Swanson

Theodore Swanson began studying trombone at the age of 11. In 10th grade, he began private study with Dr. Anthony Williams from the University of Northern Iowa. Following this, he placed second in the final round of the 2019 Northern Festival of Bands Solo Competition. In the summer of 2019, he attended camp at Interlochen Center for the Arts and went on to enroll in the Interlochen Arts Academy for the coming school year, studying with Thomas Riccobono. He was then accepted into the Juilliard School, where he currently studies with Joseph Alessi. While at the Juilliard School, Theodore has performed in the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of conductors including Barbara Hannigan, Antonio Pappano, and Kevin John Edusei. In 2021, he was awarded Second Prize in the National Symphony’s College Concerto Competition as a part of their summer music institute, and placed in the semi-final round of Ian Bousfield’s International Trombone Competition. This year, he was named a Fellow at the Music Academy of the West, and will join them for their 75th annual season this coming summer.
