Yoon-ji Lee: “Getting Closer” for violin and piano
Performed by 48 St. Stephen (Clara Kim and Angela Kim)

Violinist Clara Kim and pianist Angela Kim give the world premiere of Yoon-ji Lee’s Getting Closer, which was commissioned by the performers as part of St. Botolph Club Foundation’s Emerging Artist Award. It’s spontaneous music, exploring a variety of piano and violin extended techniques in what feels like a stream-of-consciousness. Lee’s music thunders between grainy dissonances and twinkling harmony, taking us through a series of ever-changing emotions and musical ideas. The two were excited to perform a new work by Lee, who’s open-minded imagination in music composition is always engaging and surprising.

This is the second of two House Music series videos Clara and Angela filmed in Philadelphia with Four/Ten Media. The first, which ran in April, presented the world premiere of Bongani Ndodona-Breen’s Khanyisa. These two videos celebrate the one year anniversary of the House Music series, which began in March 2020 with Clara’s performance of Andrew Norman’s Sabina.
