Nathalie Joachim: “Wander” for flute
Performed by Andrew Rehrig

Flutist Andrew Rehrig celebrates friendship from a distance with his House Music series performance of flutist and composer Nathalie Joachim’s Wander. Like many other musicians, Rehrig hasn’t had the chance to play music with friends and colleagues since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Instead, he’s looked for comfort in learning music that has backing tracks, which makes solo performance feel more collaborative. One of those pieces was Joachim’s Wander, which was written in 2010 for her close friend. The joyful piece incorporates layers of Joachim’s voice beneath the flute, and infuses her personality into every beat. On top of that, Rehrig and Joachim have known each other since studying with Carol Wincenc in school, so when Rehrig plays Wander, it truly feels like performing with a friend.

The collaborative nature of Rehrig’s House Music series video extends to his work with Metropolis Ensemble, too. He’s worked with the group for quite some time: He began performing with them in 2009, and over the years, he’s been thrilled by every opportunity he’s had to work with the ensemble. Rehrig recorded this House Music series video at the home of one more of his longtime friends, the flutist Alex Sopp. More information about Nathalie Joachim’s music.
