Playlist for the week of March 26, 2021I chose these songs and pieces not for any stylistic or technical qualities they have in common, but rather for a kind of shared intensity of spirit they all seem to possess. I often find myself exhorting my composition students to “go further” with an idea, take it to its extreme. Extremes are what grip us in music, make us sit up and take notice. I don’t mean “extreme” as in loud, fast, and in your face—much of the music here is extreme in its simplicity, or its emotional tenor. —Timo Andres
