The Chinese Canadian composer Vivian Fung (why not Viviane ?) writes music drawing on Indonesian sounds, her violin concerto growing from journeying in the company of Kristin Lee, who plays her part with pleasing aplomb, to explore gamelan music first hand.
I rather preferred it to the more expansive concerto for (Cageian) prepared piano, but both make for exhilarating listening and are well worth the Naxos price.
The notes are comprehensive, but would be better if someone took the small trouble to put in track timings for the various sections, as does Chinese/American Lei Liang on his latest disc for Naxos.
Exciting, skilfully put together music with many exoticisms, but time will tell Fung's staying power.
