Infinite Staircase

In 2010–17, Metropolis partnered with artists and institutions to develop, co-produce, and premiere a theatrical work, fusing film, music, and traditional dance and musical arts.

The creative team included filmmaker Rithy Pahn, composer Him Sophy, music director Andrew Cyr, choreographer Belle Sodhachivy, and staging director Gideon Obarzanek.

The production toured across Australia, Taiwan, United States, France, and Cambodia, with 100+ artists.

In 2021–22, Metropolis was commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to produce a twelve-month video series of new music by composer Matthew Evan Taylor.

Each month’s remote video performance offered a time-lapse exploration of African American, Indian, and European music genres, generating 350k+ views on Instagram.

The project culminated in a concert at The Met, featuring a MetLiveArts / Metropolis commissioned one-hour work.
Performers: RAJAS, Rajna Swaminathan, Ganavya, Matthew Evan Taylor, and Metropolis

The sold-out concert celebrated resilience and triumph in the face of despair. It later premiered on YouTube alongside a behind-the-scenes discussion with the creative team.

Biophony SoundGarden
In February 2023, 5,000 enthusiastic visitors explored a site-specific immersive soundbath by composer Ricardo Romaneiro and 20 musicians.
Metropolis and Brooklyn Botanic Garden co-commissioned the project installed in each of the BBG conservatory ecosystems.

Bangsokol

The Rite Remixed
In July 2008, Metropolis presented the world premiere commission of a live electronic remix of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
Three concerts were held at Le Poisson Rouge and Celebrate Brooklyn for an audience of 10,000 alongside indie sensation Deerhoof.

Brownstone
From 2010–16, Metropolis toured our commissioned site-specific electro-acoustic composition installed in a three-story Brooklyn brownstone, a Manhattan mansion, and homes across New Hampshire and Maine.
Guests were invited to freely wander and create their own sonic experience.
