Intimate Event Space

  • From 2017–2022, the light-filled art gallery Candice Madey and OnStellarRays opened their doors at One Rivington to 92 events including 5 Metropolis commissions.
  • Metropolis Ensemble produced and supported 30+ events annually, including immersive concerts, readings, festivals, workshops, open rehearsals, interactive demonstrations, and artist-led performance series.
  • Partner organizations from the broader music community also hosted public events, concerts, and release parties in this premiere NYC venue.

Please note: Metropolis no longer accepts requests for use of this space.

Artist Incubator Program

  • One Rivington also served as a professional collaborative hub for emerging artists in partnership with Metropolis.
  • Select artists were invited to our residency program with a support framework to develop new works, produce innovative concerts, and curate event series.
  • During the pandemic, Metropolis programming shifted seamlessly online via newly created projects, including House Music, Free Assembly, and Flame Keepers.

Artist Spotlight: Molly Joyce

  • In 2018–19, composer and artist Molly Joyce produced Light, a multi-part concert series featuring innovative and eclectic musicians.
  • The series highlighted critical motivations, processes, and creative solutions in the development of new works that are socially-motivated and culturally-driven.

Artist Spotlight: The Brothers Balliett

  • In 2017, composers and performers Brad and Doug Balliett developed multiple world premiere works, commissioned by Metropolis.
  • Two “Interactive Shakespeare” concerts featured the poetry of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Julius Caesar.
  • Metropolis presented an open-workshop of When a Man Loves Two Women, a comic opera inspired by an episode of Frasier.

Artist Spotlight: Erika Dohi

  • In 2019, Blueprints Piano Series, founded by pianist Erika Dohi and Daniel Anastasio, collaborated with Metropolis to create In Visible Roads, a pan-stylistic festival and musical cartography with the piano as guiding compass.
  • Across 13 concerts, the festival brought together seemingly disparate jazz artists and improvisers, classical and contemporary specialists.

Artist Spotlight: David Leon

  • In 2021, saxophonist and composer David Leon produced Bird’s Eye, inspired by folk music of Cuba and Korea, featuring Doyeon Kim on gayageum and Lesley Mok on percussion.
  • As a recipient of New Music USA’s 2021 Creator Development Fund, Bird’s Eye workshopped new compositions in residency with Metropolis Ensemble.
