About Ricardo
Merging Electronic and Classical Worlds
As a multi-faceted composer and electronic artist, Ricardo Romaneiro seeks to synthesize his interest in electronic music with his background in classical composition. Ricardo is a long-time Metropolis collaborator, with popular and lauded premieres over the years including Biophony SoundGarden, The Rite Remixed, Hallucinations, and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.
Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Ricardo is a graduate of The Juilliard School and co-founder of SUBHAZE, an audiovisual collective and collaborative project, where they create audiovisual experiences that transcend the traditional forms of presentation.

LIQUIDVERSE: Microcosm & Macrocosm
Ricardo Romaneiro is collaborating with Cosm Studios, Metropolis, and Liquid Light Lab to create an immersive audiovisual symphonic journey into the beginning of the universe for a new Los Angeles venue: the world’s first 87-foot diameter 12K LED dome, opening in 2024.

Other Career Highlights
In 2021, Ricardo Romaneiro was commissioned by National Geographic and Disney+ to create an audiovisual re-imagined score for the world premiere film, “Secrets of the Whales,” at National Sawdust. He also created a live 100-piece orchestra and choir performance to accompany Terrance Malick’s film Voyage of Time at BAM in 2018.

2023
Biophony SoundGarden
Metropolis commissioned Ricardo Romaneiro to create an immersive soundbath experience with 20 musicians in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's conservatory ecosystems. The installation featured an ongoing, hands-on interactive experience for 4,800+ visitors of all ages using plants as live musical instruments to create “living” compositions.
2020
Thomas Edison's A Christmas Carol
The Kennedy Center and Metropolis Ensemble presented the world premiere of Ricardo Romaneiro's co-commissioned live film score to Thomas Edison’s digitally remastered 1910 silent film, "A Christmas Carol." The reimagined film was broadcast on December 25, 2020 as part of The Kennedy Center’s “Arts Across America: Winter Traditions” series.

Fritz Lang: Metropolis
Ricardo Romaneiro created a live soundtrack to Fritz Lang’s iconic 1927 silent film, "Metropolis," commissioned by Metropolis Ensemble and presented at National Sawdust, employing their breakthrough spatial acoustic sound system and featuring the electro-acoustic jazz trio of Immanuel Wilkins, Chris Fishman, and JK Kim.

Metropolis Ensemble Tenth Anniversary
Inspired by John Cage’s “Musicircus,” Ricardo Romaneiro, composer Paula Matthusen, and artistic director Andrew Cyr collaborated to create multi-sensory musical performances, sound installations, projection mapping, and performance art alongside sixty composers and performers to celebrate ten years of music innovation.
2015
Brownstone
Ricardo Romaneiro’s world premiere Metropolis commission, "The Coarse Air," was featured as part of Brownstone: a site-specific, 360-degree concert at a Beaux Arts mansion, that featured new electro-acoustic works from Ricardo, Jakub Ciupinski, and Christopher Cerrone, where audiences wandered through the space to create their own auditory experience.

Scar Arias
Metropolis presented the world premiere commissioned project from Ricardo Romaneiro: an intimate salon-style concert with electro-acoustic music, poetry, and cuisine in a historic townhouse. “Scar Arias” is a five-song cycle for chamber ensemble, electronics, and soprano, with ambient soundscapes and live electronic voice manipulation with soprano Mellissa Hughes.

Music Box
Ricardo Romaneiro was commissioned by Metropolis to create “Glitch” for virtuoso harpist Bridget Kibbey’s Resident Artist Series concert at Le Poisson Rouge, featuring world premieres from six American immigrant composers who were inspired by their native folk traditions and personal narratives.

Hallucinations
Metropolis presented a mind-bending concert featuring the world premiere electro-acoustic remix by Ricardo Romaneiro of John Corigliano's "Three Hallucinations," based on his Academy Award-nominated film score to "Altered States," paired with newly commissioned works by composers Du Yun, Gity Razaz, Enrico Chapela, and Ricardo Romaneiro.
2008
The Rite Remixed
Metropolis, Ricardo Romaneiro, Ryan Francis, and Leo Leite collaborated to re-conceptualize Igor Stravinsky's revolutionary "The Rite of Spring" beyond the boundaries of live electro-classical music. The projects was presented at Celebrate Brooklyn! and Le Poisson Rouge, alongside singer Hila Plitmann and indie rock sensation Deerhoof.
